Good morning my friends! Well I FINALLY have week two of Julie Yeager’s Summer Mosaic CAL under my belt. This last weeks installment took me a bit longer than expected as that darn thing called life seemed to be getting in the way but I manage to get it done and I have to say I am just loving it so far!
This is actually the first ever CAL I have participated in that I have not had the pleasure of running myself so I find myself waiting anxiously for the next clue to be released!
Now I have had to adapt a couple of things to get this to work out for me due to my tight tension but so far so good 🙂
I have not changed the actual design but where Julie has fpdc i have had to do fptr …..so of course her fptr are changed to fpdtr and….well you get where I am heading with this….all the front post stitches I have had to extend so my piece doesn’t curl.
Now I am going to share with you a couple of tricks I use so my piece doesn’t have those pesky gaps that can be caused by slip stitching and those pesky chain stitches that count as your first stitch.
When I first started to crochet I was never really sure if I was accidentally using my slip stitch as a stitch so I was forever having to count my rounds to make sure I was not ending up with an extra stitch…..well not any more! Here’s how and it is super easy!
Now those of you that know me are well aware that I my tension is SUPER tight! Why don’t I loosen up my tension you ask? Well 2 reasons…..I have tried that before and my stitches end up really uneven, and the biggest reason being is…..wait for it…..I don’t want to! I love the way my work looks and I am completely happy with it so the tricks I use to adapt are well worth the little extra time it may take me.
Okay….lets get started with this super easy trick to never mistake your slip stitch for a regular stitch again 🙂
When you come to an end of a round and slip stitch to your first stitch it normally looks like photo 1….a little smaller than the rest of your stitches but bu the time you get back around to it you are really not quite sure if this is a stitch so there you go, back to counting your stitches to see if you should use it.
Here is my fix: Because of my tight tension I ALWAYS have my Clover Amour 2.25mm close at hand. Insert that small hook into that last loop and pull the loop tight (photo 2)
Continue as you normally would and slip stitch to your beginning stitch keeping the yarn taunt through the entire stitch. (photo 3)
Now you have a really small slip stitch that you will never mistake for a regular stitch (photo 4) I told you it was super easy!
Now let’s move on the those pesky chain stitches that count as a stitch and leave unsightly gaps in your work.
Just to show you how well my slip stitch trick works 🙂 (photo 1)
Now when you start your round of when doing dc’s with a chain 3 you end up with a gap (photo 2) Well I am going to show you how to get rid of that gap and never do a chain 3 start to a round ever again! Take your small hook and slip stitch to your beginning stitch. Now don’t change back to your regular hook just get…..keep with the smaller hook and ch 1 (photo 3)
Now switch back to you regular hook and do a sc in the same stitch as your slip stitch . Now you see that little outside vertical bar shown in photo 4? Insert you hook under it and do a sc
(photos 4 and 5) and now you have your first dc! (photo 6) Continue with your round until you are back to the beginning ( photo 7) and slip stitch with your smaller hook into your first dc
(photo 8) and…….TA-DAH!!!!!! No ugly gap! (photos 9 & 10)
Now you can pin this to your Crochet Tips and Tricks Board over on Pinterest for easy access. What????? You don’t have a tips and tricks board???? Well then this can be your first pin as soon as you make one! 🙂
I have used this method all through my pieces for the Summer Mosaic CAL and I just love how my eye is not drawn to any gaps.
If you have not already started this CAL there is still time to get the pattern at no charge! Just pop on over to Julie’s blog and grab the code needed and you will receive all the updates for free….don’t wait as once the CAL is over as it will not be free any longer 🙂
Until next time my friends…….
